Cryosurgical therapy, an advanced treatment option that uses super low temperatures to kill prostate cancer cells, is one of several minimally invasive approaches to prostate cancer treatment offered at our practice.
During cryotherapy treatment, our physicians insert several needles into the prostate to freeze and destroy the prostate cancer cells. Argon gas circulates through the needles, lowering the temperature to -40°C for several minutes. Helium gas circulates to increase the temperature. Your doctor can then control the extent of freezing and evaluate the prostate and needle placement with ultrasound imaging during the procedure.
Cryotherapy is less invasive and does not cause as many urinary side effects as some forms of radiation therapy. Cryotherapy is usually an outpatient procedure, so patients can typically go home the day of treatment. Recovery following cryotherapy treatment is rapid.
