InterStim® Therapy is a proven neuromodulation therapy that targets the communication problem between the brain and the nerves that control the bladder. If those nerves are not communicating correctly, the bladder will not function properly. InterStim Therapy was created by Medtronic, and more than 100,000 people worldwide have received InterStim Therapy.
How It Works
It’s widely believed that a possible cause of an overactive bladder is miscommunication between the brain and the sacral nerves. When the brain and nerves do not communicate correctly, the bladder will not function properly.
InterStim Therapy stimulates the sacral nerves with mild electrical pulses that reduce the signals to the nervous system that may be causing bladder control symptoms such as leaks, the sudden urge to go, or going too often.
How effective is InterStim Therapy?
According to Medtronic, in a long-term clinical study, it was found that 59% of patients with urge incontinence who received InterStim Therapy and completed follow-up with their doctors, had at least 50% fewer leaks per day when compared to the number of leaks before therapy.
However, individual results may vary and not every patient that receives InterStim will experience the same results.
Is InterStim Therapy FDA approved?
Yes. InterStim Therapy was approved by the FDA in 1997 for urge incontinence and in 1999 for non-obstructive urinary retention and significant symptoms of urgency-frequency. Most recently, it has been approved for fecal incontinence as well.
